Where Does CBD Coffee Come From? Sourcing and Quality Explained
The quality of CBD coffee depends on two things: the coffee beans and the CBD extract. Here is a deep look at how both are sourced, processed, and combined to create a premium product.
Coffee Bean Sourcing
Not all CBD coffee starts with great coffee. Many brands use commodity-grade beans and rely on CBD as the selling point. At Buddha Beans, we believe the coffee itself has to be excellent. We source single-origin, specialty-grade beans from three regions:
Colombia (Salgar, Antioquia)
Our Colombia CBD Coffee comes from smallholder farms in the Salgar municipality of Antioquia. The region sits at 1,500-1,900 meters elevation with rich volcanic soil. The beans are washed-process, producing a clean cup with chocolate, caramel, and walnut notes. This is our most popular origin and a great starting point for new customers.
Ethiopia (Kochere, Yirgacheffe)
Our Ethiopia CBD Coffee comes from the Kochere washing station in the Yirgacheffe region, widely considered the birthplace of coffee. These are natural-process beans, dried with the cherry fruit intact, which produces the bright, fruity, and floral character Ethiopia is famous for. Tasting notes include blueberry, citrus, and jasmine.
Mexico (Chiapas)
Our Mexico CBD Coffee is sourced from cooperatives in the Chiapas highlands. These washed-process beans are known for their smooth, approachable profile: nutty, clean, with brown sugar sweetness. This is our most balanced, everyday-drinking origin.
What Makes "Specialty Grade" Different?
Specialty coffee is graded on a 100-point scale by certified Q graders. Beans scoring 80+ are considered specialty grade. This means fewer defects, more complex flavors, and better farming practices. Commodity coffee (used in most grocery store brands) scores below 80 and is often blended from multiple countries to mask inconsistencies.
CBD Sourcing and Extraction
The CBD used in Buddha Beans comes from USDA-certified organic, USA-grown hemp. Here is why each part of that matters:
- USDA Organic: No synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers used in growing the hemp
- USA-grown: American hemp is subject to stricter agricultural regulations than imported hemp. We know exactly which farms our hemp comes from
- Winterized CO2 extraction: This is the cleanest extraction method available. Supercritical CO2 pulls cannabinoids from the hemp without using chemical solvents. Winterization removes waxes and lipids, leaving a pure, potent extract
Broad-Spectrum vs. Full-Spectrum vs. Isolate
We use broad-spectrum CBD, which means our extract contains CBD plus other beneficial cannabinoids (like CBG), terpenes, and flavonoids, but with all THC removed. This delivers the "entourage effect" (multiple compounds working together) without any risk of THC exposure.
The Infusion Process
Our proprietary infusion process introduces CBD extract into the coffee beans during the roasting phase. This is different from brands that spray CBD oil onto pre-roasted beans or mix CBD into ground coffee after the fact. Infusing during roasting ensures:
- Even distribution of CBD throughout every bean
- Consistent dosage from cup to cup
- No oily residue or off-flavors
- The CBD bonds with the natural oils in the coffee bean
Third-Party Testing
Every batch of Buddha Beans is sent to an independent, third-party laboratory for testing. We test for cannabinoid potency (to verify the CBD amount matches the label), THC content (confirmed non-detectable), heavy metals, pesticides, microbials, and residual solvents.
