What is CBG?

CBG, short for cannabigerol, is one of more than 100 cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. It is sometimes called the "mother cannabinoid" because the acid form, CBGA, is the chemical precursor that the plant converts into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA as it matures. Most of the CBGA gets used up during the plant's life cycle, which is why CBG appears in trace amounts in mature hemp, usually under 1 percent of total cannabinoid mass.

CBG is non-intoxicating. It binds only weakly to the CB1 receptor, the receptor most associated with the THC high. That mechanistic fact is why CBG, like CBD, does not produce a high when you consume it.

The descriptors that hold up at the cup level: smooth, low-acid, balanced. The descriptors that do not hold up and you will not see on this page: focus, calm, anxiety relief framed as outcomes. Those framings live in medical-claim territory. The lab data lives at lab results, and the question of how you feel after a cup is yours to answer.

CBG vs CBD: What Makes Them Different

CBG and CBD are both non-intoxicating hemp cannabinoids. They are not the same compound. CBD sits later in the plant's chemistry, after the CBGA precursor has converted. CBG sits earlier. In a mature hemp plant the two compounds coexist, but CBG is far rarer because most of the CBGA has already been used up by the time the plant is harvested. That rarity is the whole story of why CBG costs more and why most brands do not bother with it.

Extraction tells the same story. A pound of mature hemp flower yields a meaningful amount of CBD. The same pound yields a fraction of that in CBG, sometimes a tenth or less. To produce a usable CBG isolate or broad-spectrum extract, a roaster needs roughly ten times the raw plant material per gram of finished cannabinoid. That cost shows up in the bag. It also shows up in how few CBD brands offer a true CBG product at all. Most do not. Buddha Beans started infusing CBG in 2019 because nobody else was doing it. A deeper CBG vs CBD breakdown lives here.

Why Our CBG Coffee Is Different

We Made It First

Buddha Beans shipped its first CBG-infused specialty coffee in 2019. The category did not exist before that. Most CBD coffee brands still do not sell a CBG product. The few that have launched since 2022 are following a road we cut.

Single-Origin Colombia, SCA 80+

The base coffee is direct-trade Colombia Huila microlot, SCA-graded specialty (80 point minimum). Medium-heavy body, chocolate and caramel notes, light citrus brightness. The cannabinoid extract sits in the finish rather than fighting the front of the cup.

Bonded During the Roast

Most CBD coffees on the market spray hemp oil onto already-roasted beans. The oil sits on the surface and the dose pools in the corners of the bag. Buddha Beans bonds the cannabinoid to green coffee during the roast curve itself, so the bag is uniform from top to bottom.

Lab Tested Every Batch

Every roast lot goes through an independent ISO 17025-accredited laboratory before it ships. Cannabinoid potency across 11 compounds, 66 pesticides, 4 heavy metals, 5 mycotoxins, residual solvents, microbials. The COA is published by batch ID at lab results.

How CBG Infusion Works

Three steps, all verifiable on the certificate of analysis.

1

Extract

A CO2-extracted broad-spectrum hemp extract is potency-verified for CBG content before it enters the roastery. Solvent residues, heavy metals, and THC are screened in advance.

2

Bond During Roast

The extract is introduced to green Colombia coffee at a specific temperature point in the roast curve. The bean's cellular structure absorbs and locks the cannabinoid in place during development.

3

Batch Test

The roast lot is sampled at three points (top, middle, bottom of the bin) and sent to an independent ISO 17025-accredited lab. A passing batch holds cannabinoid concentration within plus or minus 8 percent across all three samples.

Tasting Notes for the CBG Range

Black Label Colombia CBG

Medium-Dark Roast · Heavy Body

Dark caramel and bittersweet chocolate up front. The hemp extract integrates into the finish as a clean herbal note, never grassy. Pairs well with whole milk or oat milk. Low acid, smooth on the stomach, the kind of cup that holds up to a second mug.

Colombia CBG + CBD Coffee

Medium Roast · Balanced Body

Brighter than Black Label, with milk chocolate and toffee notes and a touch of citrus brightness in the finish. The original CBG cup. Smooth, low-acid, balanced. The Colombia Huila base does most of the talking and the cannabinoids stay in the background.

Coffee Flight (Sampler)

Three Origins, One Box

The Colombia CBG carries chocolate and caramel. The organic Mexico Chiapas is gentler, with brown sugar and a hint of cocoa. The Ethiopia opens up bright, floral, with citrus and tea-like notes. A useful comparison set for a household that drinks coffee three different ways.

The Lab Work and the Numbers

Every batch of Buddha Beans CBG coffee carries a batch ID and a third-party COA. The lab is independent, ISO 17025-accredited, and gets paid for the test, not for a passing result. If you buy a bag, you can match the batch ID on the side to the PDF on the lab results page in 30 seconds.

Dose variance limit

The Colombia CBG product delivers roughly 6 to 7mg CBG plus an equal amount of CBD per 8oz cup. Black Label roughly doubles that. THC sits at non-detect, verified at the analytical detection limit of 0.05 mg per gram. The source hemp is broad-spectrum (THC removed) and the source coffee is USDA Organic on the Coffee Flight and the Mexico component, conventional but direct-trade on the Colombia base. Want to verify a bag you bought: find the batch ID on the back, look it up in the COA table at lab results, click the PDF. Numbers should match the bag claim within plus or minus 10 percent. If they do not, the page lists an email for written follow-up.

The Customer Voice

These are the kinds of things customers actually write in reviews. Pulled from the public Yotpo corpus, formatted with first name and last initial.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CBG coffee?

CBG coffee is specialty coffee infused with cannabigerol (CBG), a non-intoxicating hemp cannabinoid. Buddha Beans bonds the cannabinoid to single-origin Colombia beans during the roast itself, so every cup carries a measurable dose of CBG alongside the caffeine.

How is CBG different from CBD?

CBG and CBD are both non-intoxicating hemp cannabinoids, but they are different compounds. CBG sits earlier in the plant's chemistry as the precursor that the plant later converts into CBD and other cannabinoids. CBG is rarer in mature hemp, harder to extract, and more expensive. Most CBD brands never bother with it.

Will CBG coffee get me high?

No. CBG is non-intoxicating. It binds only weakly to the CB1 receptor, which is the receptor most associated with the THC high. Buddha Beans CBG products use broad-spectrum hemp extract with non-detectable THC, verified on every batch by an independent ISO 17025-accredited laboratory.

Is CBG coffee lab tested?

Yes. Every batch is tested by an independent ISO 17025-accredited laboratory before it ships. Testing covers cannabinoid potency across 11 compounds, 66 pesticides, 4 heavy metals, 5 mycotoxins, residual solvents, and microbial contaminants. The certificate of analysis lives on the lab results page, linked by batch ID.

Is CBG coffee legal in all 50 states?

In the United States, hemp-derived CBG products are federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill provided the source hemp contains less than 0.3 percent THC. Buddha Beans CBG coffee meets that threshold and ships nationwide. A few states have additional restrictions on cannabinoid products, so check local rules if you live in Idaho, Iowa, or any state with a hemp registration program.

Does CBG coffee interact with medications?

Cannabinoids can interact with the cytochrome P450 liver enzymes that metabolize many prescription drugs. Ask your doctor or pharmacist. The lab analysis lists exact cannabinoid concentrations so you have something concrete to bring to the conversation. Drugs of practical concern include warfarin, statins, SSRIs, and grapefruit-warning medications.

How much CBG is in each cup?

Colombia CBG + CBD Coffee delivers roughly 6 to 7mg of CBG per 8oz cup, paired with a near-equal amount of CBD. Black Label Colombia CBG roughly doubles those numbers, with 300mg CBG and 300mg CBD in a 12oz bag. Most customers settle on one cup of standard or one cup of Black Label per morning.

What does CBG coffee taste like?

Like coffee. The single-origin Colombia base carries chocolate and caramel notes, a medium-heavy body, and light citrus brightness. The hemp extract sits in the finish rather than fighting the front of the cup. Customers describe it as smooth, low-acid, and balanced.

Can I drink CBG coffee daily?

Yes. Cannabinoids are not habit-forming in the way caffeine is. Many Buddha Beans customers drink one cup every morning as part of their routine. The Subscribe and Save program ships fresh beans to the door on a monthly cadence for that reason.

Why is CBG coffee more expensive than regular coffee?

Two cost drivers. First, the source coffee is SCA 80+ specialty grade, direct-trade Colombia, which already prices above commodity coffee. Second, CBG appears in trace amounts in mature hemp (often under 1 percent of total cannabinoid mass), so extracting a usable CBG isolate or broad-spectrum extract takes far more raw plant material than extracting CBD. The cost differential shows up in the bag.

The Story

I started infusing CBG in 2019 because nobody else was. Most CBD coffee brands still don't. The math is harder, the extract costs more, and the upside is a calmer cup. Worth it.

Buddha Beans shipped what I'm pretty sure was the first commercial CBG-infused coffee in the country. Seven years later we are still roasting it in Culver City, still buying direct from the same Colombia farms, still putting every batch through an independent lab. The category got crowded, then it got thinner, and the brands that took shortcuts didn't make it. We did.
