Buddha Beans Coffee Co. was founded on a simple belief: your morning cup should be worth drinking, and it should not leave you wired and jittery. Our Story

Buddha Beans was founded in 2018 in San Diego, California by Marc Narrie, who started by roasting coffee on a hot air popcorn maker in his kitchen. Marc had been a CBD user for years and a specialty coffee obsessive for longer, and pairing the two gave him the cup he had been chasing: the focus and energy of good coffee without the jitter and crash of an oversized one. The first batches were for friends. Within a year, he had moved to a commercial roaster, registered the brand, and began shipping nationally. We are now headquartered in Los Angeles with our own roasting and fulfillment under one roof.

Buddha Beans was co-founded in 2018 with Lucy Hodges. Lucy departed day-to-day operations in 2019 and remains a silent partner; Marc has run the company solo since then. Our broader team includes our roasting and packaging staff in Los Angeles, customer support, and a network of independent labs that test every batch before it ships.

Where Our Coffee Comes From

Every coffee we sell is single-origin, sourced directly from small farms in Colombia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Burundi, Peru, and Costa Rica. We work with growers who prioritize quality at every stage, from soil health and harvest timing to processing method and export. These are not commodity coffees. They are specialty-grade lots, scoring 80 or higher on the Specialty Coffee Association 100-point scale, selected for their complexity, cleanliness, and flavor potential. Each lot is roasted in small batches to bring out the best of its origin.

How We Source Our Hemp

Our CBD comes exclusively from USDA-certified organic hemp farms in Oregon and Washington. We do not source internationally, and we do not use hemp grown with synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Every lot is traceable from seed to extraction. The hemp is processed using winterized CO2 extraction, a solvent-free method that produces a clean, refined broad spectrum CBD oil. Winterization removes the fats and waxes from the extract, improving how the CBD binds to the coffee during roasting.

How We Make It: The ZenFusion Process

Our ZenFusion infusion process introduces broad-spectrum CBD extract into the beans during small-batch roasting, not sprayed on after as most CBD coffees do. This is a meaningful difference. Spray-on CBD sits unevenly on the bean surface and oxidizes quickly. Infusion during roasting binds the cannabinoids more deeply, gives consistent per-cup dosage, and preserves flavor integrity. We use only winterized CO2 broad spectrum CBD and CBG isolate from USDA-certified organic hemp.

What Broad Spectrum Means

All of our CBD products use broad spectrum CBD, which means the extract contains a full range of cannabinoids and terpenes naturally present in the hemp plant, including CBD, CBG, CBC, and others, while containing 0% THC. Researchers use the term entourage effect for the idea that cannabinoids and terpenes may interact with one another rather than acting in isolation. That idea is still being studied, and we make no claim about what it does for you. What we can state is what is in the bag: a broad range of hemp cannabinoids, no psychoactive effects, and 0% THC verified by COA. The current FDA position on hemp-derived CBD is summarized in the FDA cannabis regulatory overview. Hemp-derived CBD with less than 0.3% THC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill.
