CBG + CBD Together: Why Our Dual-Cannabinoid Coffee Works Better
What Happens When You Combine CBG and CBD?
Most CBD coffee brands use CBD alone. Most CBG products use CBG alone. Buddha Beans CBG coffee is formulated with approximately equal parts CBG and CBD, delivering about 7mg of each cannabinoid per cup. This is not an accident or a cost-saving measure. It is a deliberate formulation based on emerging cannabinoid science.
The Research: 6x More Potent Together
A 2024 study published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics tested CBD and CBG both individually and in combination. The results were striking:
- When given alone, CBD required 19.1 mg/kg to reach its effective dose. CBG required 40.67 mg/kg.
- When combined in a 1:1 ratio, the effective dose dropped to just 5.26 mg/kg total, a 6-fold increase in potency compared to what would be predicted if the effects were simply additive.
- In a separate test measuring withdrawal symptoms, the combination produced a greater than 4-fold increase in potency, with an observed effective dose of 5.5 mg/kg versus an expected 24.05 mg/kg.
In plain language: the combination needed far less total cannabinoid to achieve the same effect. The two compounds amplified each other.
Why Does This Synergy Happen?
CBD and CBG interact with the endocannabinoid system through different mechanisms:
CBD (Cannabidiol)
- Indirect modulator of CB1 and CB2 receptors
- Activates 5-HT1A serotonin receptors
- Inhibits FAAH enzyme (increases natural endocannabinoids)
- Primary effect: calm, relaxation, stress relief
CBG (Cannabigerol)
- Partial agonist at CB1 and CB2 (direct binding)
- Activates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors
- Acts on PPARgamma receptors (metabolism)
- Primary effect: focus, clarity, alertness
Because they target different receptors and pathways, the combination creates a broader pharmacological footprint than either compound alone. The 2024 comprehensive review in Molecules noted that "synergistic interactions between CBD and CBG" may result from "the activation of multiple targets and pathways besides CB1 and CB2 receptors."
The Entourage Effect: What It Means (Honestly)
The term "entourage effect" was coined in 1998 by Israeli researchers Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat. The concept proposes that cannabinoids, terpenes, and other hemp compounds work better together than in isolation.
What the evidence supports: Multiple studies, including the 2024 CBD+CBG synergy study cited above, demonstrate measurable synergistic interactions between specific cannabinoid pairs. The 6-fold potency increase is a concrete, peer-reviewed data point.
What to be cautious about: A 2023 review in Biomedicines noted that the entourage effect as a broad concept has mixed evidence and that the term is sometimes used loosely in marketing. We believe in being transparent: the CBD+CBG synergy data is promising and measurable, but most research is preclinical (animal and cell studies). Large-scale human clinical trials are still needed.
That said, the preclinical evidence for the CBG+CBD combination specifically is among the strongest in cannabinoid research, and the 1:1 ratio used in our coffee matches the ratio used in the peer-reviewed studies.
What This Means for Your Morning Cup
When you drink a cup of Buddha Beans CBG coffee, you are getting approximately:
- 7mg CBG acting directly on CB1/CB2 receptors and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors for focus and clarity
- 7mg CBD modulating your endocannabinoid system and serotonin receptors for calm balance
- ~95mg caffeine blocking adenosine receptors for energy and alertness
Three complementary compounds. Three different mechanisms. One cup.
The CBG provides directed focus. The CBD smooths out the caffeine's edge. The caffeine provides the energy. Users describe this combination as "the clearest, most productive energy I have felt from coffee."
Why Most Brands Do Not Offer This
Most CBD coffee brands use CBD isolate or broad-spectrum CBD extract. They do not include CBG for two reasons:
- CBG is expensive. Because hemp produces only 1-2% CBG (vs. 15-25% CBD), CBG extraction requires significantly more raw material.
- CBG requires specialized extraction. Harvesting hemp earlier in its growth cycle captures more CBG but less total biomass, creating a tradeoff that most brands do not invest in.
Buddha Beans was among the first specialty coffee brands to offer single-origin CBG coffee, recognizing the unique potential of cannabigerol before the broader market adopted it. Our Black Label takes this further with 300mg CBG + 300mg CBD in a single bag, delivering approximately 25mg total cannabinoids per cup.

| Black Label CBG + CBD (12oz) | ~12.5mg | ~12.5mg | ~25mg | $35 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7mg of CBG per cup enough to feel effects?
When combined with 7mg CBD, the synergistic interaction means the effective potency may be significantly higher than the raw mg number suggests. The 2024 study showed a 6-fold increase in potency for the combination. Most users report noticeable effects at this dose, particularly when combined with caffeine.
Can I just take a CBG capsule with regular coffee instead?
You could, but the timing and absorption would differ. When CBG is infused into the coffee bean, it is released gradually as you brew and drink, distributing absorption over 15-20 minutes. A capsule delivers the full dose at once. Additionally, our infusion process bonds CBG with the coffee bean's natural oils, which may improve bioavailability.
Are there human clinical trials on CBG+CBD coffee specifically?
Not on CBG+CBD coffee specifically. The synergy research referenced above used purified CBD and CBG extracts in animal models. We believe in transparency: the preclinical evidence is strong and peer-reviewed, but large-scale human clinical trials on the specific combination in coffee are still needed. We report what the science shows, not more.
