How Much CBD Is in a Cup of CBD Coffee?
How Much CBD Is in a Cup of CBD Coffee?
It's the most common question we get, and one that surprisingly few CBD coffee brands answer honestly. So here are the real numbers for Buddha Beans, and the one variable that most brands don't tell you about.
The Short Answer
How much CBD ends up in your cup depends on two things: the total CBD content of the bag, and how many grams of grounds you use per brew. Here's what that looks like in practice for our two main roasts:
Our Standard 300mg CBD Coffee (12oz bag)
A standard 12oz bag of Buddha Beans CBD coffee contains 300mg of broad-spectrum CBD infused directly into the beans. A 12oz bag yields approximately 20–30 cups depending on brew strength.
- Light brew (1 tbsp / ~6g grounds per 12oz cup): approximately 10mg CBD per cup
- Standard brew (2 tbsp / ~10–12g grounds per 12oz cup): approximately 12–15mg CBD per cup
- Strong brew (3 tbsp / ~18g grounds per 12oz cup): approximately 18–20mg CBD per cup
For most people, 10–15mg per cup is the typical real-world dose from a standard brew of our 300mg coffee.
Our Black Label 600mg CBD Coffee
Our Black Label is double-infused, 600mg of CBD in a 12oz bag. Same number of cups, roughly double the CBD per serving:
- Light brew (~6g grounds): approximately 20mg CBD per cup
- Standard brew (~10–12g grounds): approximately 25mg CBD per cup
- Strong brew (~18g grounds): approximately 30–35mg CBD per cup
At a standard brew strength, the Black Label delivers approximately 25mg of CBD per cup, closer to the dose used in most CBD research studies.
How Does CBD Survive Brewing?
A fair question. Hot water and heat do degrade some cannabinoids. At Buddha Beans, we infuse CBD into the bean at low temperature specifically to protect it through the brewing process. Independent lab testing on brewed cups confirms that a significant portion of the infused CBD does transfer into the liquid, our infusion method is designed for this.
Espresso and Moka pot methods (high pressure, shorter extraction) tend to pull slightly less CBD than a 4-minute French press or pour-over. If maximising CBD extraction is a priority, a French press with a 4-minute steep is your best method.
Why the Amount of Grounds Matters Most
This is the variable almost no brand talks about, and it's the most important one. Because the CBD is distributed evenly throughout the grounds, the more grounds you use, the more CBD ends up in your cup.
The specialty coffee standard of 1:15 to 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio (by weight) is a good starting point. But if you're brewing CBD coffee specifically for wellness effects, consider measuring your grounds by weight rather than by tablespoon, tablespoons can vary by 30–40% depending on grind size and how loosely you scoop.
A kitchen scale and 12–14g of grounds per 12oz of water will give you a consistent, repeatable dose every time.
