CBD coffee sounds like a gimmick until you have a good cup of it. This guide covers what it actually is, how we make it, what is in each cup, and how to brew it, written from the roasting side of the business.
What is CBD coffee?
CBD coffee is real specialty coffee infused with cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound from the hemp plant. You get the same caffeine, flavor, and ritual as any good coffee, plus a measured dose of CBD in every cup. It will not get you high. At Buddha Beans we start with single-origin Arabica beans, then infuse them with broad-spectrum hemp extract so the CBD is built into the bean rather than sprinkled on top.
How is CBD coffee made?
Most CBD coffee falls into one of two camps: a powder or oil stirred in after brewing, or beans infused before they reach you. We do the second. Our process binds broad-spectrum hemp extract to the roasted bean so each scoop carries an even dose. A few details that matter:
- Broad-spectrum, not isolate. The extract keeps the hemp plant's wider range of cannabinoids and natural terpenes instead of stripping everything down to pure CBD.
- Winterized CO2 extraction. A clean, solvent-free method that pulls out waxes and fats, which keeps the coffee tasting like coffee.
- USDA organic hemp. The extract source is certified organic.
- Lab tested. Every batch goes to an independent lab for cannabinoid potency and purity. The results live on our lab results page.
Does CBD coffee get you high?
No. CBD is non-intoxicating, and our hemp extract carries no detectable THC, the compound responsible for the high in cannabis. The only ingredient that changes how alert you feel is the caffeine, which is the same caffeine in any coffee.
What does CBD coffee taste like?
Like good coffee. That is the whole point of infusing the bean instead of dumping in oil. A well-made CBD coffee tastes like its origin first: the citrus and florals of an Ethiopian, the caramel and chocolate of a Colombian. Broad-spectrum extract leaves a faint, pleasant herbal note in the background, closer to the finish than the first sip. If your CBD coffee tastes grassy or medicinal, the infusion was done poorly or an oil was stirred in after roasting.
How much CBD is in a cup?
Our standard bags hold 300mg of CBD across 12 ounces of coffee, and the Black Label line doubles that to 600mg. A 12oz bag brews around 16 to 20 cups depending on how strong you like it, so a standard bag works out to roughly 15 to 19mg of CBD per cup. Because the extract is infused evenly, the dose per scoop stays consistent from the first cup to the last.
Why pair caffeine and CBD?
Caffeine wakes you up. It can also leave some people feeling wired. The reason a lot of our customers reach for CBD coffee is the pairing: the same morning lift, with a steadier feel. We are a coffee company, not a doctor, so we will not make health promises here. What we can say is that people tell us the cup feels smoother than straight coffee, and they keep reordering. Try it and judge for yourself.
CBD coffee vs CBG coffee
CBD is the well-known hemp cannabinoid. CBG, cannabigerol, is rarer and often called the "mother cannabinoid" because the others form from it in the plant. We make both, including blends that pair CBG and CBD in one bag. If you already know CBD and want to experiment, the CBG coffee collection is the place to start.
How do you brew CBD coffee?
Exactly like any specialty coffee. The cannabinoids are infused into the bean and hold up to normal brewing temperatures, so drip, pour-over, French press, espresso, and cold brew all work. Use fresh water just off the boil, a burr grind matched to your method, and a 1-to-16 coffee-to-water ratio as a starting point. Our full brewing guide walks through each method.
How to choose your first CBD coffee
Start with roast and origin, the same as any coffee.
- Like bright, fruity coffee? Go with a light-roast African single origin such as our Ethiopia Kochere.
- Like bold and chocolatey? A natural-process or darker Latin American coffee lands closer to home.
- Want the strongest dose? The Black Label line carries 600mg per bag.
- Cutting caffeine? Try the half-caf or the Swiss Water decaf, both with a full CBD dose.
Is CBD coffee legal, and can you ship it to me?
Our coffee is hemp-derived with no detectable THC, and we ship to all 50 states. Hemp and CBD rules continue to shift at the federal and state level, so if you want certainty for your area, check your local regulations. We keep our lab results public so you always know exactly what is in the bag.
Frequently asked questions
Is CBD coffee safe to drink every day?
It is coffee with hemp extract, both of which people consume daily. We cannot give medical advice, so if you take medication or have a health condition, talk to your doctor about CBD first.
Will CBD coffee make me fail a drug test?
Our broad-spectrum extract has no detectable THC, but no hemp company can promise a specific drug-test result. If a test is a concern, the safest choice is to avoid all hemp products.
Does the CBD survive brewing?
Yes. The cannabinoids are infused into the bean and hold up to standard brewing temperatures, so the dose makes it into your cup.
Can I drink CBD coffee at night?
It still has caffeine, so treat it like any coffee. For an evening cup, our Swiss Water decaf keeps the CBD without the caffeine.
How is this different from adding CBD oil to my coffee?
Oil floats and doses unevenly, and it can taste off. Infusing the extract into the bean gives a consistent dose per cup and keeps the coffee tasting clean.
