CBG vs CBD: what is the difference, and which is right for you?
People ask me this all the time. They have heard of CBD. Now they see CBG on our bags and want to know what changed. Here is the plain version, from someone who roasts both into coffee every week.
The short answer
CBD and CBG are both compounds from hemp. Neither one gets you high. CBD is the one most people know, with more research behind it. CBG is rarer, newer to study, and the two seem to work well together. We use both.
What they have in common
Both come from the hemp plant. Both are non-intoxicating, so neither will get you high the way THC does. Both are federally legal when they come from hemp that stays under 0.3% Delta-9 THC. And both can be infused into coffee, which is what we do.
How they are different
Three differences matter.
Research. CBD has been studied far more, for years. CBG research is younger, with fewer human trials so far.
Abundance. Hemp makes plenty of CBD. CBG is scarce, often around 1% of a mature plant, because the plant converts it into other compounds as it grows. That scarcity makes CBG harder to produce.
How people describe it. This part is personal and not a medical claim. Many CBD users talk about feeling relaxed. CBG users often describe something more like steady, clear focus. Your own experience may differ.
Why CBG is called the "mother cannabinoid"
In the hemp plant, the acid form of CBG is the starting point. As the plant grows, it converts into CBD, THC, and the rest. CBG comes first and becomes the others, which is how it earned the nickname.
What the research says
I will keep this honest. CBD has the bigger body of research. CBG is earlier, and most studies so far are in labs and animals. One human trial published in Scientific Reports in 2024 found a single 20mg dose of hemp-derived CBG lowered anxiety and stress compared with a placebo, without any intoxication. It is one study, not the last word, but it is a real signal.
None of this is medical advice, and neither compound is a treatment for any condition.
Why we use both
There is a theory in hemp research called the entourage effect: cannabinoids may do more together than alone. It is still a theory. But it fits what our customers tell us, so our CBG coffees pair CBG with CBD in the same cup rather than betting on one. You can read the full story in our guide to CBG coffee.
Which one is right for you?
If you already know and like CBD, our CBD coffees are an easy start. If you want to try the pairing and that steadier kind of focus people describe, reach for a CBG blend. There is no wrong answer, and you can switch.
- Colombia CBG+CBD Coffee, 12oz: both compounds, everyday strength.
- Black Label, 300mg CBG + 300mg CBD: the same coffee, a bigger dose.
FAQ
Is CBG stronger than CBD?
Not stronger, different. They interact with the body in different ways, and many people use them together.
Will either get me high?
No. Both are non-intoxicating. Our coffee is broad-spectrum and tested to stay under 0.3% THC.
Can I take CBG and CBD together?
Yes. Our CBG coffees combine the two on purpose. If you take medication, check with your doctor first.
Which has more research?
CBD, by a wide margin. CBG research is promising but still early.
