CBG + CBD Coffee: The Entourage Effect in Your Morning Cup
Most people know CBD. Fewer know CBG, cannabigerol, the lesser-studied cannabinoid that's become one of the most interesting compounds in the hemp plant. Our Colombia CBG + CBD coffee combines 150mg of each in a single origin Salgar Antioquia base, and understanding why we formulated it this way requires a brief detour into hemp plant chemistry.
What Is CBG?
Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, and in many ways, it's the most important one. CBG is the precursor cannabinoid from which other cannabinoids are synthesized. In the growing hemp plant, CBGA (the acidic form of CBG) is the chemical starting point that eventually becomes CBDA, THCA, and CBCA through enzymatic conversion.
By the time hemp is harvested, most CBG has already been converted to other cannabinoids, which is why CBG is typically present in much lower concentrations than CBD in mature hemp plants, usually under 1% by weight. This makes CBG more expensive to extract and concentrate than CBD, which is one reason CBG products command a premium.
What Research Shows About CBG
CBG research is earlier-stage than CBD research, but the findings are generating significant scientific interest. Preliminary studies have explored CBG's potential in several areas:
- Neuroprotection: A 2015 study in Neurotherapeutics found CBG to be neuroprotective in a mouse model of Huntington's disease, improving motor function and protecting striatal neurons.
- Focus and alertness: Anecdotal reports and some early research suggest CBG may promote an alert, focused mental state, a contrast to CBD, which is more commonly associated with calming effects.
- Antibacterial properties: CBG has shown activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in laboratory studies, one of the most cited findings in CBG research.
- Appetite regulation: A 2016 study found CBG significantly stimulated appetite in rats without causing the psychoactive effects associated with THC.
We make no medical claims from these findings, but they explain why the hemp research community has accelerated focus on CBG as a distinct compound with its own pharmacological profile.
The Entourage Effect: Why CBG + CBD Together May Be More Effective
The "entourage effect" is a hypothesis first formalized by researcher Ethan Russo in 2011, building on earlier work by Raphael Mechoulam. The core idea: cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the hemp plant work synergistically, with each compound modulating the effects of the others in ways that produce a different outcome than any single compound in isolation.
This is the primary argument for broad spectrum and full spectrum products over CBD isolate, and it's the same principle behind combining CBG with CBD.
While CBG's role in the entourage effect is still being studied, early research suggests:
- CBG and CBD interact with different receptor systems (CBG shows affinity for alpha-2 adrenoceptors and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors; CBD primarily modulates the endocannabinoid system indirectly)
- The combination may produce a more alert, focused effect than CBD alone, pairing well with caffeine's stimulating properties
- Together, they may provide a broader range of endocannabinoid system support than either alone
Why We Chose 150mg CBG + 150mg CBD
The 50/50 split between CBG and CBD in our Colombia blend was a deliberate formulation choice. CBD's well-documented calming, balancing effects combined with CBG's reported focus-supporting properties creates a profile that aligns with how most people actually want to feel in the morning: calm but alert, focused but not anxious.
The 300mg total cannabinoid load per bag is consistent with our other products, so the serving size and dose experience remain familiar. You're getting the same total cannabinoid content, just a different cannabinoid profile.
The Colombia Single Origin Base
We chose our Colombia Salgar Antioquia beans as the base for the CBG + CBD blend for the same reasons they work for our standard Colombia CBD coffee: a clean, bright flavor profile that doesn't compete with the extract, and a washed processing method that produces transparency and clarity in the cup.
A bold, natural-processed coffee might overpower the subtle differences in the CBG + CBD experience. A clean Colombia washed coffee lets the extract play a more prominent role while still delivering a great single origin cup.
Who Is CBG + CBD Coffee For?
Our Colombia CBG + CBD coffee is a natural choice if:
- You already use CBD and want to explore what adding CBG to your routine feels like
- You find standard CBD coffee sometimes makes you feel too relaxed in the morning
- You're interested in the broader pharmacology of the hemp plant beyond CBD alone
- You want a morning cup that supports focus as well as calm
Start with one cup in the morning and give yourself a week to notice any difference from your usual CBD coffee or regular coffee routine. Effects from cannabinoids can be subtle and cumulative.
What This Means
CBG is not a replacement for CBD, it's a complement. Our Colombia CBG + CBD coffee is built on the principle that the hemp plant offers more than one interesting compound, and that combining them intelligently in a clean, single origin coffee base produces something worth drinking every morning.
