CBD coffee: the complete guide
I started Buddha Beans in 2019 with a popcorn roaster in my kitchen in San Diego. I was already using CBD for my own health, and one morning I put it in my coffee. The change was small but real. I reached for fewer cups, and the usual edge was gone. That cup turned into a company.
This is the full guide to CBD coffee: what it is, how it is made, what the research says, how much is in a cup, and how to pick one. I will keep it plain and honest, including the parts the hype usually skips.
What CBD coffee is
CBD coffee is real coffee with cannabidiol added. CBD is a compound from hemp. It will not get you high, because it is non-intoxicating. You get the caffeine and flavor of good coffee, plus the CBD.
The idea is balance. Coffee pushes you up. For a lot of people, CBD takes the sharp edge off that push. The result many describe is calm, steady energy instead of a jittery spike.
The first rule: it has to be good coffee first
Most CBD coffee fails on the coffee. Brands grab cheap beans, hide them behind the hemp story, and hope you do not notice. You notice.
We start the other way around. Single-origin beans from farms in Colombia, Ethiopia, Mexico, Burundi, Peru, and more, each scored 80 or higher by the Specialty Coffee Association. Specialty grade first. The CBD comes after.
Infused, not sprayed
Here is the part that actually matters for quality. Many CBD coffees are sprayed with CBD oil after roasting. It is cheap and uneven, so one cup has a lot and the next has almost none. It also tastes grassy.
We do it differently. Our ZenFusion process bonds broad-spectrum CBD to the bean during the roast. That means a steady amount in every cup and no hemp aftertaste. You can read more about how we roast.
What the research actually says
I would rather be straight with you than oversell. CBD has more research behind it than most hemp compounds, but it is not a cure for anything, and I am not going to pretend a cup of coffee is medicine.
People take CBD for a sense of calm and balance. Some studies look at CBD and stress or sleep, with promising but still developing results. The honest summary: early evidence, more to learn, and effects vary from person to person.
None of this is medical advice. If you take medication, talk to your doctor first, since CBD can affect how some drugs are processed.
How much CBD is in a cup?
Our standard 12oz bags carry 300mg of CBD, which works out to roughly 15mg per cup depending on how you brew. Our Black Label line doubles that to 600mg, around 30mg per cup.
If you are new, start with a standard bag and a normal cup, then adjust. There is no need to chase a big dose. Consistency matters more than size.
Will it still wake me up?
Yes. The caffeine is still there. CBD does not cancel it out. What changes for many people is the feel: awake and focused, with less of the wired, anxious push. A lot of our customers tell us they drink fewer cups through the day because the energy is steadier.
CBD or CBG?
You may have seen CBG on some of our bags too. CBG is a rarer hemp compound, newer to research, that we were among the first to put in coffee. We even blend the two. If you want the difference in plain terms, read CBG vs CBD or our guide to CBG coffee.
Is CBD coffee legal?
Yes. Hemp-derived CBD is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill as long as the finished product stays under 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Ours is broad-spectrum and third-party lab tested, with a Certificate of Analysis you can read. A few states add their own rules, so check yours. The same legal basis covers CBG, which we cover in is CBG coffee legal.

How to brew it
Brew it like any specialty coffee, because that is what it is. Pour over, drip, French press, espresso, and cold brew all work. The CBD is bonded to the bean, so you do not lose it in the method. Use good water, a clean grinder, and fresh beans, and you are set.

Does CBD cancel out the caffeine?

How much CBD should I start with?
A standard 12oz bag is about 15mg per cup. Start there, then adjust. You do not need a big dose.

Our coffee is broad-spectrum and verified under 0.3% THC, but no hemp product can promise a clean test for everyone. If you are tested, be cautious.
