What Is CBG?

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the hemp plant, and in many ways, it's the most important one. CBG is the precursor cannabinoid from which other cannabinoids are synthesized. In the growing hemp plant, CBGA (the acidic form of CBG) is the chemical starting point that eventually becomes CBDA, THCA, and CBCA through enzymatic conversion.

By the time hemp is harvested, most CBG has already been converted to other cannabinoids, which is why CBG is typically present in much lower concentrations than CBD in mature hemp plants, usually under 1% by weight. This makes CBG more expensive to extract and concentrate than CBD, which is one reason CBG products command a premium.

What Research Shows About CBG

CBG research is earlier-stage than CBD research, but the findings are generating significant scientific interest. Preliminary studies have explored CBG's potential in several areas:

• Receptor pharmacology: laboratory work has mapped which receptors CBG binds to, and the profile is not the same as CBD's. This is bench chemistry, not an outcome in people, and we make no claims about it.
• Appetite in animal models: a 2016 study reported that CBG stimulated appetite in rats without the psychoactive effects associated with THC. That was a rodent study. Animal findings do not transfer to people, and we are reporting what the researchers observed, not a product benefit.

We make no medical claims from any of this. Preliminary and animal research cannot establish an effect in people. What it does explain is why the hemp research community now treats CBG as a compound worth studying on its own rather than a CBD footnote.

• CBG and CBD bind differently in laboratory assays. Published work describes CBG affinity for alpha-2 adrenoceptors and 5-HT1A serotonin receptors, while CBD is described as modulating the endocannabinoid system indirectly.
• Because the two are not chemically interchangeable, a blend of both has a different cannabinoid profile than CBD alone. That is a statement about the contents of the bag.
• Whether combining them produces anything beyond the sum of its parts in a person is still an open research question. We make no claims either way.

CBG is the rarer and more expensive of the two, and a token amount would have been a marketing gesture rather than a real blend.
