What is the Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect is the theory that the cannabinoids and terpenes naturally present in hemp work better together than any single compound does on its own. It was first proposed in a 1998 paper by researchers Shimon Ben-Shabat and Raphael Mechoulam, and has been supported by subsequent studies showing that whole-plant extracts produce more consistent effects than isolated CBD at equivalent doses. The practical implication for customers: broad-spectrum or full-spectrum hemp products often feel more effective than CBD isolate, even at the same milligram dose.

What the research suggests

A 2015 study from Israel's Lautenberg Center for General and Tumor Immunology compared CBD isolate to full-spectrum extract at matched doses. Isolate showed a classic bell-curve response (more is not always better), while full-spectrum extract produced a linear dose-response and held its effects longer.

How it applies to Buddha Beans coffee

We use broad-spectrum extract rather than isolate. That means each cup contains not just CBD but also small amounts of CBG, CBC, and naturally occurring terpenes. Customers consistently report that our coffee feels smoother and more consistent than experiments they have done with pure isolate.

Terpenes and the entourage effect

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds responsible for the smell and flavor of hemp, coffee, and most plants. Research suggests certain terpenes (like myrcene and linalool) modulate how cannabinoids affect the body. A broad-spectrum extract preserves these. See our terpenes glossary page for more.
