The Entourage Effect: Why CBD and CBG Work Better Together
What Is the Entourage Effect?
The concept was introduced in 1998 by Israeli researchers Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat. The idea is that the hemp plant evolved over millions of years to produce these compounds together, and they function as a system rather than as isolated molecules.
The Evidence: CBD + CBG Synergy
A 2024 study provided some of the strongest evidence for cannabinoid synergy to date. When researchers tested CBD and CBG together in a 1:1 ratio:
- The combination was 6x more potent than predicted by additive models
- The observed effective dose was 5.26 mg/kg versus an expected 29.89 mg/kg
- A separate test showed 4x greater potency for the combination
This is measurable, peer-reviewed synergy, not marketing language.
How It Works: Multiple Receptor Targets
The synergy occurs because CBD and CBG activate different receptor pathways simultaneously:
- CBG directly binds CB1/CB2 receptors + alpha-2 adrenergic receptors
- CBD modulates the ECS indirectly + activates 5-HT1A serotonin receptors
- Together they create a broader pharmacological footprint than either achieves alone
Honest Caveats
A 2023 review noted that the entourage effect as a broad concept has mixed evidence, and the term is sometimes used loosely. We believe in transparency: the CBD+CBG synergy data is specific, peer-reviewed, and promising. But most research is preclinical. Large-scale human clinical trials are needed.
Why Our 1:1 Ratio Matches the Research
The 2024 synergy study used a 1:1 potency-matched ratio of CBD to CBG. Our CBG coffee is formulated with approximately equal parts CBG and CBD, matching the research protocol.
